Adobe Reveals a Full-Fledged Touch screen Version of Photoshop CC at Surface Event

Photoshop isn't the easiest app to use on a touch screen, but Adobe is quickly beginning to change that. Looking to address the growing market of touch devices, Microsoft and Adobe have teamed up to improve Photoshop and Illustrator on touch screens.

Both applications running in Windows 8.1 will support touch gestures, greatly improving their usability on tablets like the Surface Pro 3. This full-powered version of Photoshop CC features larger touch gestures which allow users to perform functions such as zoom, pan and rotate.

The touch-friendly features can be accessed via Playground, a new minimalist view inside Photoshop that lets one swipe through layers in a file.

Additionally, the touch-friendly version of Photoshop is likely going to be ready for use with HiDPI screens, ensuring that as screens get denser in pixels, Photoshop CC will be ready to go.

The introduction of mobile-friendly, full-fledged version of Adobe applications demonstrates one of the advantages of the subscription and cloud-based model. "There is renewed energy in terms of the partnership," Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said while onstage at the event. Both companies are also focusing on cloud services and bringing their hardware and software together.

David Wadhwani, Senior Vice President of Digital Media at Adobe, added: "The pace of innovation continues to accelerate with Creative Cloud and today we are introducing a new family of mobile apps that are deeply integrated with flagship CC desktop tools, like Photoshop and Illustrator, and taking mobile devices into the creative mainstream.”

The benefit to these improvements for touch screens is that Adobe can still offer the full Photoshop experience and interface when you switch to using a keyboard and mouse.

Currently the application has only been shown off on Microsoft hardware, but other brands will likely benefit from these advances as well. Touch Photoshop is a dream for all designers; Microsoft and Adobe are just doing that.
